Junk Culture could very well be the indie world’s replacement for Girl Talk and his ever growing popularity. A couple of years ago I saw Girl Talk play at the Echoplex, a 700 person venue that wasn’t even close to being sold out. Now, he’s practically headlining festivals, getting evening time slots at Coachella, Lollapalooza, and practically every other popular festival of the past couple of years. Junk Culture may be the next logical step from Girl Talk. They’re both on Illegal Art, and they both make music based on samples and loops. Junk Culture is a little more abstract in what he does, the pop hook he samples in “West Coast” is undetectable, as is the beat, but they make a nice combination. “West Coast”, the first single, is a result of savvy sampling and smart beat making. The song gets a little bit repetitive, but for a first single, it’s not a big deal. Deepak Mantena (his real name) is someone to look out for, he’ll be opening shows for Girl Talk and will probably create quite a buzz for himself.
There are a couple things that he does that really make him stand out. First of all, he runs all his music through a handheld recorder, which gives it a really gritty, lo-fi feel, which I’m a big sucker for. Second, the Junk Culture live show also involves Deepak’s younger brother, Nitin, on drums. The performance includes the Mantena siblings jamming to a tight string of sequences that involve sampled patterns, live percussion, synced visuals of films from the 50’s/60’s, and Deepak’s singing. Live, the “West Coast” tracks have him singing on top of sampled voices, while material already being developed for the subsequent EP involves a more traditional vocal approach, further bridging the gap between sample-based production and songwriting. The Junk Culture EP is coming out October 27th, with another one due in the spring of 2010. He’ll be playing a couple of shows with Girl Talk, check out the dates below, and download “West Coast” as well. - THE TAPE IS NOT STICKY
